8 Steps For Choosing The Perfect Color For Your New Roof

8 Steps For Choosing The Perfect Color For Your New Roof

The inspection is complete, your homeowners claim has been processed and your appointment is scheduled. The only thing left for you to do is pick a color. Exciting right? And maybe a little overwhelming? Choosing a shingle color that compliments your home is one of the biggest challenges you may face as a homeowner. It is a decision that once made, is one that you and your neighbors will be living with for a long time.

But don’t worry, Eagle Eye Roofing has your back. Because the decision is such an important one, we have outlined 8 easy steps for choosing the perfect color.

Step 1

Consider Your Climate

The weather in your area actually does matter when it comes to picking the perfect roof color. Depending on the effectiveness and efficiency of your attic ventilation and insulation, the color of your shingles can affect the temperature of your top floor by as much as 20 to 30 degrees.

The lighter the color, the more sunlight is reflected and the cooler your home stays. A darker shingle will absorb more sunlight, keeping you warm and cozy in the winter and help to melt heavy snow and ice from your house. But like we mentioned, with a proper roofing system the shingle color won’t affect your home’s interior temperature that much.

Step 2

Think About Curb Appeal

A new roof can completely change the look of your property. Getting new shingles can be a great opportunity to improve your home’s curb appeal and increase your home’s resale value.

Step 3

Examine The Other Exterior Elements

Your roof represents as much as 40% of your home’s visual exterior so choosing the perfect color and style of roofing is important. You will want to pick a shingle that coordinates with the other exterior elements of your property. Don’t think you can pick just any neutral roof color and ensure a perfect match.

You want to go with a shingle color that both complements and contrasts with your home’s exterior elements. If everything matches perfectly, the overall appearance will be uninspiring.

Also consider the space. Light colored shingles can make your home look bigger and can help spotlight the positive details of your home, while picking darker colors will hide imperfections and make your home look less imposing.

Step 4

Evaluate Your Architecture and Style

Think about your home’s style and decide what constitutes a suitable color. Historical homes usually look best in traditional colors. Rural, rustic or waterfront homes have a more relaxed look and pair well with weathered grays, browns and even muted greens.

Step 5

Remember Your Neighborhood

As appealing as it may sound to some, you do not live on a deserted island. When it’s time to put on a new roof, consider your neighbors and your neighborhood. If you have a homeowners association you will want to check to see if there are any rules or covenants regarding color choice.

Even if you don't have an HOA you will still want to think about how your roof will look next to neighbor's house. If the homes do not complement each other it can make it more difficult to sell in the future.

Keep in mind complementing is not copying. You do not want to have the exact same roof as everyone else on your block unless that is the standard for the neighborhood. The perfect shingle color should enhance your home as well as coordinate with its surroundings.

Step 6

Do Some Field Research

There are a variety of shingle options on the market today. Don’t be shy, browse through books and magazines! Once you have narrowed down your choices, take some life sized samples outside. Hold them up against your current roof to see how much the new color differs from your existing shingles. Make sure to do this at various times throughout the day to make sure that it is really a color you like. While you are out there, double check that the shingle color doesn’t clash with your siding and trim.

Don’t forget to drive around your community to get an idea of what color of roofing would look best on your house. Pay attention to homes similar to yours in color and architectural style.

Step 7

Make Use Of Roof Planning Software

Owens Corning and CertainTeed are two well known shingle manufacturers that we use here at Eagle Eye. They have both developed software that will let you download a picture of your own home or select from a gallery of housing styles to see how different roofing options might look.
